On June 13th, 2017, the Village of Moweaqua passed Ordinance #2017-13 allowing Electric/Gas Non-Highway Vehicles to operate on village roadways. A Non-Highway vehicle means a motor vehicle not specifically designed to be operated on a public highway, to include, but not limited to, All-terrain vehicles, Golf Carts, Off-highway motorcycles and Recreational off-highway vehicles. This does not include 4-wheeled ATV’s.

The Village Code was amended by the addition of Section 4-10 to Chapter 24 allowing such vehicle to operate on Village Streets. After careful consideration, the Village Board determined that non-highway vehicles may safely travel on or across the roadway and that public safety will not be jeopardized.

Now that we move into spring and summer, it’s time to get your Electric/Gas Non-Highway vehicles registered. On May 21, 2018, the Village of Moweaqua will have available a registration packet to include the Inspection Form, Liability Waiver and a copy of the rules and regulations per the Village Ordinance. Packets can be picked up at the Village Hall, 122 N. Main Street, Moweaqua IL 62550 from 8AM to 4PM Monday through Friday for a cost of $25 per vehicle and is good for one year. Licenses will need to be renewed yearly.

As of May 29, 2018, all Electric/Gas Non-Highway vehicles will not be permitted on any Village roadway without a permit, which will be enforced by the Police Department. This is done to ensure the vehicle passes a safety and equipment inspection to confirm the vehicle is safe to use and is visible to other vehicles on the roadway.

The Moweaqua Police Department will be inspecting all vehicles to ensure they are compliant with the Village Ordinance to safely be used on the village roadways. The inspection form along with the registration form and liability waiver must be completed before a registration sticker is issued: non-highway vehicles will not be allowed on the village roadways without the proper license. If your non-highway vehicle fails inspection, it will be documented with the items that need repair and will then need to be re-inspected when those repairs are complete. You need to contact the Moweaqua Police Department, 768-3939, to schedule your inspection.

All the information needed to ensure your vehicle has the required equipment is listed in the Ordinance and on the inspection waiver. You also must have Liability insurance on the vehicle to have your registration form approved. Age limit for drivers is 18 years of age and older and all occupants must have their own seat-which means you can’t operate the vehicle with a child on your lap. All rules will be enforced for the safety of all riders.

Dates and Times for inspections: (Please call dispatch at 768-3939 so an officer can inspect your vehicle on the following dates and times)

May 21st through May 24th from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

May 25th and May 26th from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

No inspections on May 28th, Memorial Day.

On May 29th and after, please call 768-3939 to set up an appointment. On this day forward, you do need a permit to operate your vehicle on the roadway.
