On February 1st, 1902, Constable Martin was killed in the line of duty while attempting to serve an arrest warrant to a business owner for illegal sale of alcohol. Constable Martin entered the local business to arrest the owner. The owner went behind the counter and pulled out a double barrel shot gun firing it twice at the officer striking him in the head. Martin was later pronounced dead.
According to news articles, the Village of Moweaqua officials made a statement to his family but never recognized Constable Martin’s service to the community and his tragic death.
On October 14th, 2018, Constable Martin was honored and recognized by the police department and the Village of Moweaqua for his service with the placing of a memorial at Oasis Park, where the old jail is located.
