On February 1st, 1902, Constable Martin was killed in the line of duty while attempting to serve an arrest warrant to a business owner for illegal sale of alcohol. Constable Martin entered the local business to arrest the owner. The owner went behind the counter and pulled out a double barrel shot gun firing it twice at the officer striking him in the head. Martin was later pronounced dead.
According to news articles, the Village of Moweaqua officials made a statement to his family but never recognized Constable Martin’s service to the community and his tragic death.
On October 14th, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., Constable Martin will be honored and recognized by this department and the Village of Moweaqua for his service with the placing of a memorial at Oasis Park on Main Street, where the old jail is located.
It is Chief Maki’s honor to invite everyone to attend this dedication ceremony in honor of Constable Benjamin Martin, a fallen officer and brother in Law Enforcement. It may have taken 116 years to correct and honor Constable Martin, but we must never forget him and his service.
The Village would also like to invite you to the Moweaqua Living Memorial Tree Park Dedication held in conjunction with the Veteran War Memorial Dedication at 2:00 on October 14th, 2018. This event will be held at the Tree Park on Putnam Street.
